Introduction

Blaxploitation: Funky! Freaky! Foxy! is the 3rd curated programme Philip Brophy produced for the Melbourne International Film Festival. The focus of this programme was to celebrate Blaxploitation: the films, the stars and the music - three ingredients which were vital to this unique period of cinema history. The programme was divided into 2 sections:

The Hit List - 35mm print screenings of BLACK CEASAR, CLEOPATRA JONES, FOXY BROWN, SHAFT, SUPERFLY and TRUCK TURNER. These films are among the most famous of the blaxploitation cycle.

The Far Side - video screenings of THEE BLACK GESTAPO, HUMAN TORNADO, THE MACK, SUGAR HILL and THREE THE HARD WAY. These videos were screened at the International nightclub.

Special thanks to Festival Director James Hewison and Programming Co-ordinator Brett Woodward.
